During a slow moving afternoon I once again have got to pondering. Starting on Lost I was thinking about time travel, this then led to other mediums in which time travel featured, namely Groundhog Day. I then got thinking about the music and freeform jazz as I call it and smiled.
Moving on to a question about Groundhog Day…apparently it was supposedly decades that Phil was stuck in the time loop, but this isn’t really shown on film. Whilst quite clearly a lot of time had passed I don’t think it was ever depicted just how long. When I was reading up on the film for preperation for my review (which you can read here), I read the original script started off with Phil in the time loop and it could and possibly had been going on for decades.
I then wondered if when on his happy path and getting to know everyone in the town, if Phil ever just took a day off and said “forget it, I’m just going to slob about today”. Stayed in the hotel, ordered room service, hired a video, you know, just relaxed. I wonder if he ever solicited a hooker, it shows him using his advantage to get to know one of the residents then getting his end away but again, what if he couldn’t be bothered with all the hassle?
Furthermore, would having anyone in the same bed as him or indeed having anyone else fall in love with him have stopped the loop? Did it always have to be Rita? Did Phil indeed have to sleep in his own bed? I guess not considering he killed himself over and over.
